Apple closed its September event with the part Indian buyers actually wait for: rupee pricing. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are official, and the numbers confirm what the last two years of iPhone launches have been telling us - the Pro line is now firmly a premium-flagship purchase rather than an aspirational one. The Pro opens at Rs 1,64,900 and the Pro Max at Rs 1,79,900.
Underneath the price, this is a more interesting generation than the last. Apple has put a genuinely new piece of camera hardware in the phone rather than another incremental sensor bump, and it has moved to a 2nm chip. Whether either of those is worth an upgrade depends a lot on which iPhone you are holding right now. Here is what has been confirmed, what it costs, and where we would be honest about the trade-offs.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max price in India
Apple has kept the four-tier storage structure it introduced on recent Pro models. The confirmed India pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro is:
- 256GB - Rs 1,64,900
- 512GB - Rs 1,89,900
- 1TB - Rs 2,39,900
- 2TB - Rs 3,14,900
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900 for the 256GB variant and scales up along the same storage ladder. For reference, the US pricing is 1,199 dollars for the Pro and 1,299 dollars for the Pro Max - the usual gap between the two markets, once import duty and GST are layered on, is something we broke down in our guide to how Indian phone rules and pricing actually work.
Launch date vs sale date: the three dates that matter
These get conflated constantly, so it is worth separating them clearly:
- 9 September 2026 - the announcement. The phones were unveiled and prices published.
- 12 September 2026 - pre-orders open in India.
- 18 September 2026 - first sale. This is the first day you can actually have one in your hand.
One note on sourcing: most outlets place the India pre-order date at 12 September, though at least one report on launch night suggested 10 September. We have gone with the date the majority of sources carry, but if you are planning to order the moment the window opens, check Apple India directly on the day.
What is actually new: the variable aperture
The standout hardware change is a 48MP Fusion main camera with a variable aperture - six laser-cut blades that physically open and close to move between four aperture settings. Every previous iPhone has had a fixed aperture, simulating depth-of-field changes in software. This does it optically.
In practice that means genuine control over depth of field and over how much light hits the sensor, which matters most for portraits and for bright outdoor shots where a fixed wide aperture forces very fast shutter speeds. The rear system remains a triple 48MP arrangement, paired with an 18MP front camera.
Chip, display and battery
The A20 Pro is built on a 2nm process, with a six-core CPU and a seven-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation. RAM sits at 12GB, and the phones ship on iOS 27 with a substantially reworked, more context-aware Siri.
Battery is where the Pro Max separates itself: Apple quotes up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and up to 45 hours on the Pro Max. Fast charging gets to roughly 50 percent in about 15 minutes, and Apple claims the Pro Max can pull seven hours of video playback from a five-minute wired charge. Colours are Deep Black, Silver, Glacier and the new Burgundy.
Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro?
The honest version: if you are coming from an iPhone 15 Pro or older, this is a substantial jump - chip, camera hardware and battery all move meaningfully. If you bought a 17 Pro last year, the variable aperture is the only reason to look, and it is a photographer's reason rather than an everyone reason.
The harder question is the price. At Rs 1,64,900 to start, the Pro now costs more than most people spend on a laptop. The 256GB base is sensible for most users, but the jump to 512GB at Rs 1,89,900 is a Rs 25,000 step for storage alone - worth it only if you shoot a lot of ProRes video. And with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air expected later rather than alongside these, buyers who want a new iPhone at a saner price are being asked to wait.
One more practical point: at this price, protection stops being optional. A phone with a variable-aperture lens assembly and a large camera plateau is exactly the kind of device where a scratched lens or a cracked back turns into a very expensive repair.
Protecting a new iPhone
Royal Star does not sell phones - only the cases and screen protection that go on them. iPhone 18-specific fits are not in the catalogue yet, since the phone has not reached first sale. What is in stock right now is the full iPhone 17-series range, which is what most people buying into the Apple ecosystem this month are actually carrying:
If you want the phone's finish to stay visible, a clear case that resists yellowing is the one to get - we explained what separates a good one from a bad one in our breakdown of anti yellow back cover specifications. For screen protection on a bright OLED panel, the finish matters more than people expect; our guide to matte, privacy and clear tempered glass covers the trade-offs.

What is the iPhone 18 Pro price in India?
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 for 256GB, rising to Rs 1,89,900 for 512GB, Rs 2,39,900 for 1TB and Rs 3,14,900 for 2TB. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900.
When does the iPhone 18 Pro go on sale in India?
First sale is 18 September 2026. Pre-orders are reported to open on 12 September, six days earlier. The phones were announced on 9 September.
What does a variable aperture actually do?
It physically changes the size of the lens opening using six blades, across four settings. That gives real optical control over depth of field and over how much light reaches the sensor, rather than the software approximation every previous iPhone used.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading to from an iPhone 17 Pro?
For most people, no. The chip and battery gains are real but incremental year-on-year. The variable-aperture camera is the genuine differentiator, so the upgrade makes sense mainly if photography is a priority for you.
Final Thoughts
The iPhone 18 Pro is a confident update with one properly new idea in it, wrapped in a price that keeps climbing. If you are upgrading from a 15 Pro or earlier, you will feel every part of it. If you are not, the sensible move is to wait for the standard iPhone 18 and see where that lands. Either way, if one is arriving on 18 September, have the case and screen protection ready before the phone is.
