What Qi2.2 actually changes

Qi2 was the version of the wireless charging standard that adopted a magnetic alignment ring, borrowing the idea Apple popularised with MagSafe. It solved the biggest practical problem with wireless charging: getting the coils lined up. Its power ceiling, though, was 15W — fine for overnight, frustrating for a top-up before you leave the house.

Qi2.2 raises that ceiling to 25W. In everyday terms that is the difference between a wireless top-up being a compromise and being a genuine option. It is still slower than plugging in a 45W or 67W charger, and it always will be, because wireless transfer wastes energy as heat. But 25W over a magnetic connection with no cable is fast enough to be worth the convenience for most people.

The magnetic hold matters as much as the wattage. A power bank that slips off the back of your phone in a bag is worse than useless. Xiaomi quoting a specific hold strength — 13N on the 10,000mAh model — is a sign the category is maturing past the era of weak magnets and vague claims.

This is the part most buyers get wrong, so it is worth being blunt about. A Qi2.2 power bank sticks to your phone using magnets. If your phone has no magnet array built in — which is the case for the overwhelming majority of Android phones sold in India — then the magnets have to live in your case.

Put a Qi2.2 power bank on an Android phone in an ordinary silicone case and one of two things happens: it falls off, or it clings weakly and misaligns, which means slow charging and heat. How this compares to a conventional power bank

Magnetic power banks are not a replacement for the big wired packs. Buy one if you are already on a magnetic case and you regularly need a small top-up during the day without sitting near a socket. In that specific situation it is genuinely excellent — you stick it on, keep using the phone, and pull it off when you are done.

Do not buy one if any of the following apply. You have a phone with a very large battery that comfortably lasts a day, in which case you are solving a problem you do not have. You want the fastest possible charge, in which case a cable will always beat this. Or you do not want to commit to a magnetic case — because without one, this product simply does not work well, and no amount of Qi2.2 certification changes that.

There is also a cost point to be honest about: magnetic packs cost meaningfully more per mAh than plain wired ones. You are paying for convenience and form factor, not capacity.
