To someone shopping for a phone under Rs 30,000, this sounds like deliberate obfuscation, and the marketing does not help — every chip is described as fast, efficient and AI-ready regardless of what it actually is.
The good news is that both Qualcomm and MediaTek follow a consistent system, and it takes about five minutes to learn. Once you have it, you can look at any spec sheet and immediately place the phone in the market without reading a single review. The Snapdragon system: read the first digit
Qualcomm sorts its mobile chips into four numbered series. The first digit is the only part that tells you the class of performance:
- Snapdragon 4 series — entry level. Budget phones, typically under Rs 15,000 historically, though that band has shifted upward. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, which Qualcomm introduced in May 2026, sits here.
- Snapdragon 6 series — mid range. Comfortable everyday performance, capable of light gaming. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 was announced alongside the 4 Gen 5.

Everything after the first digit is generation and variant information. "Gen 5" means the fifth generation of that series. "Elite" is a badge Qualcomm applies to its most powerful flagship parts. Neither changes which tier the chip belongs to.
The Dimensity system: read the thousands
MediaTek uses four-digit numbers, and the leading digit works exactly the same way:
- Dimensity 6000 series — entry level 5G.

MediaTek adds suffixes like Ultra and Turbo to indicate a tuned or higher-clocked version of a chip. A Dimensity 7400 Ultra is a variant of a 7000-series part — it is not a different tier, and it is not close to a 9000-series chip.
The rule that saves you money
Here is the single most useful thing to remember: tier beats recency.
A brand-new Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is a newer chip than a two-year-old Snapdragon 8-series part, and it will still be substantially slower for anything demanding. The same holds on the MediaTek side. Marketing copy leans heavily on the word "latest", and "latest" tells you nothing about performance class.
This is why an older flagship or a discounted last-generation upper-mid phone often outperforms a brand-new budget phone at a similar price. What the tier does and does not predict
It predicts well: sustained gaming performance, how quickly the phone opens heavy apps, how well it handles multitasking after two years of use, and how much camera processing the phone can do.

Which Chip Tier Should You Actually Pick?
Be honest about what you do with your phone. If it is calls, messaging, UPI, YouTube and a camera app, a 4 or 6 series Snapdragon or a 6000/7000 series Dimensity will not hold you back, and paying for more is money you could put toward a better screen or a bigger battery instead.
If you play demanding games, shoot a lot of video, or keep phones for four or five years, buy up a tier. Chips age faster than anything else in a phone — software gets heavier every year, and a chip that felt adequate at purchase often feels slow by year three. Buying one tier above your current needs is the closest thing to future-proofing a phone allows.
The trade-off is real, though: higher-tier chips run hotter and generally cost more battery under load. A flagship chip in a thin body with a small battery can deliver worse day-to-day endurance than a mid-tier chip in a phone with a large one. The chip is one variable, not the whole phone.
