You fit a new screen protector, everything looks perfect, and then your phone stops recognising your thumb on the first try. Two attempts, three, and eventually you give up and type the PIN. It is one of the most common complaints we hear, and it almost always gets blamed on the glass being "low quality".

Sometimes that is true. Far more often, the glass is fine and something else is going on — an air gap over the sensor, a protector thicker than the sensor was designed for, or simply a fingerprint scan recorded before the glass went on. Here is how in-display sensors actually read your finger, why adhesion is the variable that matters most, and what to do about it.

Two Sensor Types, Two Different Problems

Almost every in-display fingerprint sensor in India falls into one of two camps, and they fail for different reasons.

Optical sensors are by far the more common. They light up the area under your fingertip and photograph the reflection through the display. Anything that scatters or dims that light — a hazy protector, a thick one, an oily surface — degrades the image the sensor gets. Optical sensors are fairly tolerant, which is why a cheap protector often "works". It just works a bit worse, a bit slower, and fails more often with damp fingers.

Ultrasonic sensors are used on Samsung's Galaxy S flagship line. Instead of light, they send an ultrasonic pulse through the display and read the echo off the ridges of your finger. Sound does not cross an air gap cleanly. Where light loses a little brightness through a gap, ultrasound loses the signal almost entirely — which is why an air pocket over the sensor on an ultrasonic phone does not slow unlock down, it stops it working.

That is the single most important thing to know before buying glass for a Galaxy S-series phone: adhesion is not a nice-to-have, it is the mechanism.

Why Full Adhesion Is the Deciding Factor

Edge-glued protectors bond only around the border and leave the middle floating on a microscopically thin layer of air. On a flat mid-range phone with an optical sensor, most people never notice. Put the same protector on a phone whose sensor sits right in that unbonded middle zone, and you have introduced exactly the barrier the sensor is worst at reading through.

Full glue tempered glass bonds across the entire underside, so there is no air layer anywhere — including directly over the sensor. For an ultrasonic phone that is the difference between working and not. For an optical phone it means a cleaner, brighter image reaching the sensor, which shows up as faster and more consistent unlocks.

Thickness matters too, and it is worth knowing the number. Most quality full-adhesion panels sit around 0.33mm. Cheaper glass is often thicker — 0.4mm or more — because thicker glass is easier to manufacture without breakage. That extra distance is another few tenths of a millimetre the sensor has to read through, and on ultrasonic phones especially, it is enough to matter.

How to Choose Glass for a Fingerprint Phone

Four things to check, in order of how much they actually matter.

1. Full adhesion, not edge glue. Non-negotiable if your phone has an in-display sensor. This is the whole ballgame.

2. Cut for your exact model. A model-specific panel puts the clear zone where your sensor is and the cutouts where your earpiece and camera are. Universal sheets do not, and on curved displays they will not sit down properly at the edges either.

3. Reasonable thickness. Around 0.33mm is the sweet spot between protection and sensor transparency. Be sceptical of unusually thick "extra strong" glass on an ultrasonic phone.

4. Finish. Clear glass is the safest choice for fingerprint phones. Matte finishes scatter light by design — that is what kills glare — and that same scattering can slow an optical sensor slightly. The Fix Most People Skip: Re-Enrol Your Fingerprints

This resolves the majority of "my unlock broke after fitting glass" complaints, and it costs nothing.

Your phone stored a reference scan of your finger as seen through the bare screen. Adding glass changes the optical or acoustic path slightly, so every subsequent read is now being compared against a reference taken under different conditions. The sensor is not broken; it is matching against the wrong baseline.

Go into Settings, delete every saved fingerprint, and enrol them again with the new glass fitted. Register the same finger twice if your phone allows it — once with a firm press, once with a lighter one — which widens the range of pressures it recognises. Do this after the adhesive has fully set, ideally a few hours after fitting rather than immediately.

Which One Should You Pick?

Honest guidance by phone type, including where the answer is "it does not matter much".

Samsung Galaxy S Ultra owners: full adhesion, model-specific, clear finish. Do not compromise here — an ultrasonic sensor and an air gap simply do not coexist. This is the group most likely to conclude their sensor is faulty when the protector is the problem.

Vivo, OnePlus, Redmi, iQOO owners with optical sensors: full adhesion still gives you a noticeably better result, particularly with slightly damp fingers, but you have more tolerance. Prioritise a clear finish and correct model fit.

Curved-display owners: full adhesion for a second reason entirely — edge-glued glass on a curved panel lifts within weeks regardless of what sensor you have.

The honest trade-off: full-glue glass is harder to apply than edge-glued glass. You get one attempt at alignment, because the adhesive grabs across the whole surface immediately. It also costs more. If you have a side-mounted or rear fingerprint sensor and a flat screen, a cheaper protector is a perfectly reasonable choice — none of the sensor argument applies to you.
